The 9th Essex battalion of 35 Brigade, 12th Division were relieved from the front line near Arras on 21st March, 1917 but were brought back two days later to carry out a raid on the German lines between Saps W20 and W21 with the objective of ascertaining the strength of the enemy there. No prisoners were taken but, according to the Battalion Diary, ‘considerable loss was inflicted on the enemy’, 9th Essex also suffered losses as a result of this raid with three men killed, one missing presumed killed, another who died from wounds and a further eight wounded. One of those killed was William Harley. |
